The Hyundai IONIQ 6 is the car that showed the world Korea could build an EV that's exceptionally efficient, beautiful, and affordable all at once. With a real-world range of up to 614 km (WLTP) and an 800V architecture, it's a direct rival to the Tesla Model 3. Here's how it performs in real Bulgarian conditions.

Specifications — Long Range AWD

  • Battery: 77.4 kWh (net)
  • WLTP range: 519 km (RWD, 18" wheels)
  • Power: 239 kW / 325 hp (AWD)
  • 0–100 km/h: 5.1 sec (AWD)
  • DC charging: 800V architecture, up to 230 kW
  • AC charging: 11 kW
  • Battery warranty: 8 years / 160,000 km
  • Drag coefficient: 0.21 (a record for a production car at launch)

Design: polarizing, but bold

The IONIQ 6 looks unlike anything else on the road. The aerodynamic streamliner design is functional — a drag coefficient of 0.21 is an achievement that directly boosts range. The smooth lines, low sills, and distinctive silhouette leave no one indifferent.

The interior is minimalist, but in a different way than Tesla's — there are few physical buttons for key functions, two screens (a 12" instrument cluster and a 12" central display), and plenty of light and space. Rear passengers get exceptional legroom thanks to a flat floor with no transmission tunnel.

800V architecture — why it matters

Most EVs run on 400V. The IONIQ 6 (along with the Porsche Taycan, IONIQ 5, and Kia EV6) uses 800V. The practical consequences:

  • Fast charging up to 230 kW — from 10% to 80% in about 18 minutes at a 350 kW station
  • Less heat during fast charging — the battery is under less strain
  • A steadier charging curve — less tapering compared to 400V rivals

In Bulgaria: 350 kW stations aren't available yet. Realistically, on an OMV Electra 150 kW charger, it charges at around 130–150 kW in practice — from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes. Still significantly faster than most 400V competitors.

Real-world range in our Bulgarian test

We tested the RWD 77 kWh version (not AWD):

  • Mixed summer driving (18°C): 480–510 km — remarkably close to WLTP
  • Highway at 120 km/h, summer: 390–420 km — significantly ahead of the competition
  • Mixed winter driving (-3°C): 340–370 km
  • Highway at 120 km/h, winter: 290–320 km

Efficiency at 120 km/h is outstanding for the class — the 0.21 drag coefficient really shows here. On the highway, the IONIQ 6 leaves the Tesla Model 3, VW ID.3, and MG4 behind on efficiency.

Comparison with the Tesla Model 3

Its direct rival is the Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD (~€58,000 in Bulgaria):

| | IONIQ 6 AWD | Tesla Model 3 LR AWD | |---|---|---| | Price in Bulgaria (approx.) | ~€52,000 | ~€58,000 | | WLTP range | 519 km | 629 km | | DC charging | 230 kW | 250 kW | | 0–100 km/h | 5.1 sec | 4.4 sec | | Service in Bulgaria | Strong Hyundai network | Limited Tesla service |

The IONIQ 6 is about €6,000 cheaper and offers a better service network in Bulgaria. Tesla wins on outright performance and the Supercharger network.

Hyundai and service in Bulgaria

Hyundai has a well-developed official network in Bulgaria — dealers and service centers in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Ruse, and most regional centers. By comparison, Tesla has limited service points, mostly concentrated in Sofia — Hyundai is the clear winner on service accessibility.

Spare parts and trained staff are readily available. If you live outside Sofia, the Hyundai IONIQ 6 is a significantly more practical choice than a Tesla.

Notable features

  • Vehicle to Load (V2L): You can power electrical devices directly from the car's battery — up to 3.6 kW. Useful for camping, power tools on a job site, or as backup during a power outage.
  • Highway Drive Assist 2: Level 2 autonomy — maintains lane, distance, and speed on the highway. Works reliably.
  • Heat pump as standard: Significantly improves winter efficiency. Many rivals only offer it as an option.

Who is the ideal buyer

The IONIQ 6 is perfect for:

  • People who regularly take long highway trips
  • Buyers for whom service accessibility outside Sofia matters
  • Those looking for a Tesla alternative with better value
  • Tech enthusiasts who appreciate the 800V architecture and fast charging

Less suitable if:

  • You need an SUV — the IONIQ 6 is a sedan with a sloping roofline (a limited 401-liter trunk)
  • The Supercharger network is a deciding factor for you

Conclusion

The Hyundai IONIQ 6 is one of the most impressive EVs on the market right now. For around €52,000, it offers technology, efficiency, and range comparable to cars costing €60,000 and up. In Bulgaria, the added advantage of Hyundai's strong service network makes the choice easy for many buyers.
